Experimental Applications
Practicing using unconventional resources to create realistic texture
‘Disruption’ College Project
This is an experiment using fullers earth, an unconventional product to create a cracked, stone like texture.
Once dried, the product cracks and flakes off.
Taking inspiration from gargoyles and old buildings, I was able to imitate man made and natural textures
Painting Practice – Makeup Application
Using an airbrush I created a mottled blend of colour to imitate the grey scale of cracked stone.
Adding in darker undertones to deepen cracks to texturise, and highlighting to further enhance
Water Colour Practice
Using watercolour I painted a profile exploring depth using colour to contour the face, providing me with knowledge for practical experiments in college.
In doing so, I was able to create different tonalities in skin colour for realism, discovering how hues of colour can affect the tones of skin. In this case, I used more blue undertones to cool down the skin.
I added Clock hands and numbers to represent the ‘ticking’ of an apparent mechanism further signifying the genre. On reflection, creating the clock components on a bigger scale would have been more beneficial, as they seem to be lost in the cog work.
This was a head piece made for a ‘Paper Project’ in college. Our brief was to construct a wearable item entirely out of paper, exploring construction and design.
Inspired by Steampunk Science Fiction, I constructed a cog work headpiece displaying the mechanical and technological side of the genre. I texturised paper and card to create a rusted effect, enhanced with copper colours to represent a rusted texture.
Visual Merchandising
Pandora
Working as a Supervisor for ‘Pandora’ I spend a lot of my time creating new and innovative displays that are striking to the customer. Interior merchandising is an extremely important part in increasing footfall for new customers ultimately increasing sales.
This is our ‘New Arrivals’ display, crafted from a Global guideline that all stores must follow.
It’s my job to replicate the guideline physically in the display windows, with the main goal to be that the new collection of product is displayed to perfection. This includes : ensuring the angle of the lighting is in direct contact with the product, the product is level with each other and that the props are positioned off set to the lighting to enhance the display.
For this particular cabinet, I made the decision to add an extra earring stand on the right side of the visual photo. This went against the guideline, however, by displaying earrings in a stacked setting, this increases the likelihood of customers buying more than one pair, ultimately benefiting the store sales targets and the company as a whole.
I chose to put the ‘Red Heart Studs’ on a single stand as well as on the extra earring prop, to show a variety of styling ideas customers can achieve.
